Update Notifier

So, I am sitting here at the dining room table with my daughter this dreary looking Thursday morning. She sits to my right eating her cereal, infrequently punctuating my news reading with quirky remarks about this and that. She's so wonderful. When, from out of nowhere a tiny orange "thing" appears up in my status bar.

orange update alert

I click it. Because, ya know - I'm curious like that, and a small box appears.

6 updates

Oh, cool....it's a little notifier that just became active to tell me that there is software on my fabulous Debian Lenny machine that needs updating. Well, it doesn't actually read, "Gentle Operator, you must update <software> now!" However, it does inform me that there is an update for 6 programs available.

In the little box I click Install Updates.....Whiz-bang, schweeeet! Finished.

Witness auto-click-magico:

Now I am informed that <software> has been updated and I click OK in a manner that, should my machine be a conscious thing, it may have blushed at my touch, woohoo! Then, the ghost in the machine flirts back, it checks again to make sure all is OK, and reports as much, before it dismisses itself off my desktop.

My daughter witnessed the whole (non-, routine)event and after the 20 seconds it took for that fine utility to do its job, she asked me, "Don't you just love that? Isn't that handy, Dad?"

It sure is, Sweetie.

EDIT - PS: Update notifier is installed as part of the gnome-desktop meta package, but it's not exclusive to Gnome. Pops up in my Xfce4 desktop, too.

EDITED 21mar09 with updated images and text modified to reflect such.
